Hi,
I very new to U/W photograghy was here's my question,
I will be going to grand cayman in october and was wondering what would be a good setting
for taking shoots in string ray city Shutter speed , fstop , with or without strobe .
and what about about night dives too.
I have a Olympus E-510, ikelite housing 1 ds160 strobe , 14-42mm , 50mm , 35mm lens.

Asking what settings to use is like asking "how deep is a hole", or :how long is a rope?". The answer will always be "it depends". :) More precsely - it depends on the light.

In shallow water with moving animals you want to keep a decently high shutter speed, say 1/160 is a good starting point. then your f-stop will be whatever you need to get the right expsoure. Look at the back of your LCD after each shot and change settings until you get a good exposure.

For strobe versus no strobe...

First, you almost always want to use strobes if your subject will be close to you. Strobes are only good for about 4-5 feet anyway. But be careful with the white sand, it can be tricky. in shallow water.

With strobes you will be balancing the ambient light around you with your strobe light on the foreground. your settings will need to be set to get good ambient in the background and your strobes will need to be positioned and set at a power setting to balance this out in the foreground.

When you hop in the water take some test shots on your dive buddy and get the feel for exposure. That way when the moment comes you'll have your settings in the general vicinity of correct.
