Life’s light. Life is light. You can make light do anything you want to. Photography means 'light writing'. - L. Ron Hubbard

At its heart, photography is all about light. How we use and manipulate light as underwater photographers comes from practice, but begins with an understanding of basic techniques.

At April’s NYUPS, we will be taking a look at how light (both natural and artificial) can be used to improve our images. We will start the month’s meeting with a brief presentation on various lighting techniques—wide-angle, macro, close focus wide-angle, ambient-only light, silhouettes, and other creative lighting techniques.

After the lighting brief, we invite you to share your images where you are proud of your lighting technique or would like input from fellow members on how to improve. The goal of the meeting is to improve your understanding of how important lighting is to underwater photography and examine your photos to see how they can be improved upon.

We ask that you bring no more than 5-7 images to go over in detail. We want to spend time not only hearing how you took the photo, but discussing how it could have been improved.

The ideal size of each landscape orientation image is 10” wide x 7.5” high – no larger. If an image is portrait, the image should be no more than 7.5” high x whatever width (certainly less than 10”.) If you size your images by pixels, the images should be a maximum of 720 pixels wide by 540 pixels high for landscape, and 540 pixels high for portrait.

All images should be 72 DPI, or pixels per inch, and .JPG files If you would like to submit videos, please bring them to the meeting as Quicktime files on flash drive, CD or DVD. Videos should be clips less then 5 minutes each. In your email, on the subject line please type in caps “NYUPS images –Lighting.” Please email all your images to Steve Edelstein at unclstevie@aol.com.

Please submit images before 04/13/12. Any images submitted after that cannot be included. You will receive a confirmation of the receipt of your images. If you don’t, please contact Steve Edelstein at unclstevie@aol.com, and cc Larry Cohen at Larry@liquidimagesuw.com.

Please note that you do not need to submit images to attend the meeting – feel free to just come and enjoy the images, share and learn a little about improving your underwater lighting techniques! We want to stress that all of our meetings are for photographers of all levels. It doesn't matter what camera you use or how long you've been shooting, NYUPS wants to share the joys of underwater imaging with everyone interested.

A reminder – this is not a competition. The idea is to share photos that you think will help others and yourself learn about lighting. It might even be helpful to try and recall the camera settings, whether you have a compact or big ol’ SLR. We look forward to seeing your images and sharing food and drink with you at Artctica Bar & Grill On Tuesday, April 17th !
