- Arctica Bar & Grill

People go scuba diving for many reasons. Some divers are interested in the natural beauty of coral reefs, and the animals that call this environment home. Wreck divers are interested in man-made objects that have ended up underwater by disaster. Ships sink because of bad maintenance, fire, weather, collisions and war. Once sunk, the wreck becomes a time capsule. When swimming through one of these underwater museums, one can't help but imagine the drama that happened during the sinking. These structures also attract marine growth, becoming an oasis in a desert of sand. Over time they become beautiful habitats attracting many ocean creatures. At our July meeting Larry Cohen will give a brief presentation on shipwreck photography. He will talk about lens choices, lighting and other techniques.
After the brief presentation, we invite you to share shipwreck images that you are proud of, or would like input from fellow members on how to improve. We ask that you bring no more than 6-8 images to go over in detail. We want to spend time not only hearing how you took the photo, but discussing how it could have been improved.
The ideal size of each landscape orientation image is 10” wide x 7.5” high – no larger. If an image is portrait, the image should be no more than 7.5” high x whatever width (certainly less than 10”.) If you size your images by pixels, the images should be a maximum of 720 pixels wide by 540 pixels high for landscape, and 540 pixels high for portrait.
All images should be 72 DPI, or pixels per inch, and .JPG files If you would like to submit videos, please bring them to the meeting as Quicktime files on flash drive, CD or DVD. Videos should be clips less then 5 minutes each. In your email, on the subject line please type in caps “NYUPS images: Wrecks.” Please email all your images to Steve Edelstein at firstname.lastname@example.org, and CC Larry Cohen at email@example.com.
DATE OF SUBMISSION-
Please submit images before July 8th. Any images submitted after that cannot be included. You will receive a confirmation of the receipt of your images. If you don’t, please contact Steve Edelstein at firstname.lastname@example.org, and cc Larry Cohen at Larry@liquidimagesuw.com.
Please note that you do not need to submit images to attend the meeting – feel free to just come and enjoy the images, share and learn a little about improving your shipwreck photography techniques! We want to stress that all of our meetings are for photographers of all levels. It doesn't matter what camera you use or how long you've been shooting, NYUPS wants to share the joys of underwater imaging with everyone interested.
A reminder – this is not a competition. The idea is to share photos that you think will help others and yourself learn about lighting. It might even be helpful to try and recall the camera settings, whether you have a compact or big ol’ SLR. We look forward to seeing your images and sharing food and drink with you at Artctica Bar & Grill On Tuesday, July 10th!
