Shooting big animals underwater is one of the more difficult aspects of underwater photography. Sharks, whales, dolphins, rays, sea lions, manatees, and other "big animals" evoke emotion and awe. The action is sometimes fast moving, and the subjects…
Did my 1st and almost last dive in a frigid finger lake of NY in the mid 1960's. The very leaky mask, cold temperatures, no thermal protection and total lack of training because there wasn't any. It was my college roomate's father who supplied the equipment, frogman techniques and theats to have me try it. My strongest memories of that experience aside from the horrendous ear squeeze and fact that I was overweighted and just walked on the 25 foot bottom was the incredible feeling of breathing underwater and seeing fish. It took about 20 years of work and maturity (?) to really to get certified and take up diving. Underwater photography became a natural for me because of my major involment with photography as a hobby. Presently I'm diving with a Nikon D200 housed in a Sea&Sea DX 200 with 2 YS 120 Strobes.

If the auto focus didn't lock it won't fire. Always try the auto focus lock button and pull the trigger to test if it is just the lens not catching focus, which could be due to low light maybe...
Recently returned from a dive trip on the AquaCat, Nassau-Bahamas and found my wide angle zoom Nikon 12-24 would cause the shutter release to disable only when I zoomed in during a shark dive. WHY? I troubleshot what I believe was everything and I don't belive light availabilty had anything to do with it. If I focused the camer on the sea floor, it worked. Must be some autofocus issue that is making me crazy.
