"How to Get Started in Underwater Video"

NYUPS is proud to announce our first regular monthly meeting of 2008. Our speaker will be Steve Barsky, an accomplished author, underwater photographer and videographer. His photos have been used in numerous magazine articles, catalogs, advertising, training programs, and textbooks.

Steve will give a presentation about "How to Get Started in Underwater Video", with particular attention to photographers who want to add video to the way they capture images underwater. If you already have a photographic eye, making the switch to video is not difficult, but it does involve a different way of telling stories. Steve will guide you through what’s involved in putting a video project together, including some clips from his own projects. As always, the admission to the event is free, but only by RSVP.

A prolific writer, Barsky’s work has been published in Alert Diver, Diver, Undersea Biomedical Reports, Santa Barbara Magazine, Selling Scuba, Scuba Times, Underwater Magazine, and many other publications. Steve has also produced six professional video projects including a CD-ROM for Viking dry suits and DVDs on Dry Suit Diving in Depth, The Simple Guide to Boat and Wreck Diving, California Marine Life Identification, and Choosing and Using Dive Computers. As the author of Underwater Digital Video Made Easy, Steve is able to talk with ease and authority on the subject of under water videography, and that’s exactly what Steve will talk about for NYUPS.

When: May 6th, 2008 – 7:00 PM

Where: Arctica Bar & Grill
384 Third Avenue (Between 27th & 28th)

Thank you to Larry Cohen who organized the venue for our regular meetings. The format of these meetings will be a little different from our theater events. These meetings will not have an open bar and the venue has been gracious enough to provide us the space for these meetings. Attendees are encouraged to order food and drinks to help support the venue – so come hungry and thirsty and get ready for a great underwater video session from Steve!

This is not a competition. The idea is to show your best work and let other UW photographers know your techniques and the thought process that went into the image. We plan to break into small discussion groups and then come together to share with the other groups what we
have learned.

Please submit no more then 3 of your best macro photos to Steve Edelstein unclstevie@aol.com. The images should be 72 DPI and no larger 10" on the longest side. For macro videos, please bring them to the meeting as quicktime files. Videos should be clips less then 5 minutes each.

December 2, 2008

We are hosting a holiday meeting next week at Arctica, the gracious host venue of our regular meetings this past year. We were going to have it catered and have a per person fee, but in light of the economic situation, we'd rather just have everyone together and not have money be the reason why that may not happen. So – come and enjoy the world of underwater imagery together with your friends at NYUPS.

We do have some potential sponsors that will be helping us cater the event, but worst case scenario, it's a cash bar and full menu as always.

So, the admission to the event is free, but only by RSVP. For those of you who have joined us at Acrtica this year, you know that it's a nice place but that space is limited.

Please RSVP to rsvp@NYUPS.org

We will be running a loop of all of our favorite underwater images, and we have all the images on file that have been submitted this year already. However, if you have 5 – 10 of your favorite images or short videos that you wish to have included in the reel for the evening, please email them to Steve at UnclStevie@aol.com
so they can be included.

See you there!

January 6, 2009

NYUPS member Ron Chau will be presenting Video Editing for the Beginner.

Let's face it, above or below the waves, no matter how well filmed, there is nothing more painful than watching raw video footage. With just a little bit of effort, you could turn you're everyone-wants-to-jump-out-the-window raw footage into a masterpiece that will thrill your diving and non-diving friends. Ron will cover transitions, audio soundtrack, narration, titles, picture-in-picture effects and other editing techniques.

Please add your name to the RSVP here on the site, and also please send an RSVP email to rsvp@NYUPS.org

Ron will be doing a live edit of one of his videos at this presentation. If you have some raw footage that you want to spruce up, email Ron here through the NYUPS website. You will need to snail mail him your raw footage in its original format, at least one week prior to the meeting. Include a note with any music preferences or a particular song you would like to use as an audio soundtrack. Also include any still photos you want in the video. The footage will be edited on the spot, if time allows. If not, we will continue the process at the following meeting.

This will be an interesting and lively presentation – even if you are now just shooting stills! So come over to Arctica Bar & Grill at 7 PM on January 6th to have food, drinks, and to learn how to deal with moving images.

February 3, 2009

Photoshop is so pervasive a term in our field that it has become a verb like “Google.” It is synonymous with Photo Editing. Join us on Feb 3 when NYUPS member John Ares will pick up where Jason's September Workflow session left off, and solely focus on image editing.

Regardless of what package you are currently using, whether it is iPHOTO, ACDSee, Paintshop Pro, Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperure, etc, the concepts are similar.

We will demonstrate two different approaches to editing:

• Using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Cataloging software versus
• Adobe Bridge Photo Browser, and Photoshop Elements editing

A brief look at the powerful tools in Photoshop CS4 will be demonstrated by Steve Edelstein.

You will learn:
• The difference between Cataloging and Browser software and Editors

• How Photoshop Lightroom performs RAW Conversion, and basic editing, streamlining the workflow

• How to perform basic edits in Photoshop such as exposure correction using Levels, cropping, color balance, spotting

• Intermediate techniques such as using Curves for more detailed exposure correction, and the Clone and Healing Tools for basic retouching and spotting of backscatter, etc.

From the NYUPS Website, Download the sample images that are truly in need of help. Bring your laptop with these downloaded images or feel free to bring your own images to participate by following along. (Feb3Files.zip)

PLEASE RSVP BY EMAILING RSVP@NYUPS.ORG

** If you do not have a laptop or do not wish to bring your laptop, no problem, just come learn and take notes!

Additionally, please print the notes handout for the meeting:

March 3, 2009

Our March meeting returns to our image round table format and is dedicated to compact / point & shoot cameras. We will display member images or videos captured with any point & shoot camera and discuss the images and videos and share tips on how to maximize the outcome of your work. You don't need an expensive DSLR to create great images. Remember, it's not about the camera, it's about the photographer!

Please note that you do not need to submit images to attend the meeting – you can feel free to just come and enjoy the images, share and learn a little about shooting with compact cameras!

A reminder that this is not a competition. The idea is to show your best compact / point & shoot images & video, and let other UW photographers know your techniques and the thought process that went into it.

Please submit up to 10 images or up to 3 video clips to Steve Edelstein (unclstevie@aol.com). The images should be 72 DPI and no larger 10" on the longest side. For videos, please bring them to the meeting as quicktime files. Videos should be clips less then 5 minutes each.

We look forward to seeing you at Artctica Bar & Grill on March 3rd!

As always, the admission to the event is free, but only by RSVP. Please RSVP to rsvp@NYUPS.org
